I’m sure this is on a lot of people’s minds. There are so many stories in the news about the eventual collapse of the Social Security system, that I can’t help worrying about it from time to time.
I’m 73 years old and have been retired for a while due to some health issues which I am managing quite nicely actually. My husband is 72 and still working. He works because neither of us had very high paying jobs throughout our lives and our Social Security benefits are small compared to most.
When I read that in about nine years, the federal government will have to reduce benefits by about 20%, it really worries me.
At some point, my husband will have to retire. Then we will rely on savings (not even close to what all the pundits say we should have) and our Social Security benefits. I’m pretty sure it won’t be enough.
Of course, we have no idea how long we will live. We hope it’s for quite a while longer. But if we get our wish, will we have enough money to live with some sort of dignity?
