I’ll admit, this one is dubious. I couldn’t seem to make it work the way it should.

It’s been really cold here since Thanksgiving 2023. We got snow on that day but the temperature was still in the decent range. I think the high that day was 36 degrees. Of course, on Wednesday, the high was 56 degrees. So 36 was kind of a shock.

But then on Black Friday, the high was something like 20 degrees and the highs have been in the teens ever since then.

The snow came down wet and thick and by Friday morning we had 19 inches. It continued to snow all day Friday and the official National Weather Service total ran all the way up to 21 inches.

Where we live, the city of Riverton in Wyoming, we broke the previous record set in 1979 (I think it was 17 inches then) for most snow in a 24-hour period.

We’ve had a few sunny days, but mostly it’s just been cold. We’ve also had a few freezing fogs with the attendant rime ice. The frost is dry and blows easily off the surfaces it coats. So the ice crystals float in the air. When the sun comes out, the ice crystals sparkle and the air looks like it is full of glitter.

I was struck with the beauty and had to write something. Anything. Even though I may have written about this before. So here goes.

Ice crystals floating

Glittering in the air like

Gemstones of the sun.
