Quite a few years ago, I bought a number of stainless steel straws for when I want to drink something from a bottle. Usually it is ginger beer. Fever Tree is my favorite. Swigging it from the bottle can excite a coughing fit in me. So the straw is my go to. Even then I have to be careful about how I breathe as I am sipping. Despite that, or maybe because of that, I love the stuff.
I just read an article that basically said that plastic straws are not as bad as most people think they are and that they actually make up less than 9% of the plastic waste gathered on beaches and similar places.
I’m not convinced.
The article also said that paper straws actually contain more forever chemicals (PFAS) than plastic straws.
Since there seems to be such a focus on drinking straws, I have an idea. I suggest that restaurants and fast food outlets and any establishment selling drinks simply stop supplying straws to their customers. Everyone should own at least one stainless steel straw that they keep in a pocket or a purse and use that when they want to sip something through a straw.
Problem solved.
And that’s my thought for the day.
